How much does caravan storage cost, and why we do not print a number

You came here for a number. Here is the honest reason there is not one, and the thing that is actually more useful: knowing exactly what you are comparing.
Why a national price would be useless to you
Storage is a land business. What a site charges depends on what the land is worth, how many other sites are within a sensible drive, how full it already is, how much security it has paid for, and how many square metres your van takes up. A figure that averaged a farm field in mid Wales with an indoor bay near Portsmouth would be true of nowhere and useful to nobody. There is no published UK dataset of caravan storage prices, so anyone quoting a national average has either made it up or averaged a handful of adverts.
What to compare instead
- Get the price for your length band. Almost every site prices by length. Measure the van, including the A-frame on a caravan, and quote that number.
- Get the annual and the monthly figure. An annual contract usually costs less per month. Ask what happens if you sell the van halfway through.
- Ask what the pitch actually is. Grass, gravel, hardstanding, canopy or building. These are four different products often described with the same two words.
- Ask about access. Hours, whether they change out of season, and how you get in and out at short notice.
- Ask what else is charged. Deposits, key or fob charges, moving fees, and anything payable on leaving.
The cheapest option is not always the cheapest
- A long drive costs money and weekends. Twenty extra miles each way, several times a season, has a real price and a real nuisance value.
- Restricted access costs trips. If you can only collect on weekdays, you will lose weekends to it.
- Weather and surface matter. Standing on soft ground all winter is not the same as standing on hardstanding, and tyre and damp issues cost more than the saving.
- Security has a value you cannot see until you need it. More on that in secure storage and grading.
One thing to check with your own insurer
Insurers often ask where a caravan or motorhome is kept, and Cassoa states that its accreditation is recognised by insurers with discounts available (cassoa.co.uk). What that means for your policy specifically is a question only your insurer can answer, so ring them before you book a pitch and ask how the site you are considering affects your cover and your premium.
